Conservative government continues with its tough on crime agenda

Our Conservative government is continuing to put measures in place that make sure criminals serve appropriate sentences for their crimes. Canadians asked us to fix the 'soft-on-crime' approach pursued by previous governments, and we have committed ourselves to taking up this challenge.

Our government is following though with its promise to make the judicial and corrections systems work to protect the safety and security of our communities by putting the rights of law-abiding citizens ahead of the rights of criminals.

Last month, on October 23, Bill C-25, the Truth in Sentencing Act, received Royal Assent. This is a crucial step in the right direction. Bill C-25 is a key piece of anti-crime legislation, which will end the practice of reducing criminals' sentences at a two-to-one ratio for time served in pre-trial custody.

In addition, our government introduced important legislation to crack down on white collar crime, which calls for mandatory jail sentences for fraud over $1 million.

The proposed legislation stipulates that judges must consider making offenders pay restitution to victims in all fraud cases. It would also permit the court to order an offender to not take on employment or volunteer work involving the supervision of other people's money.

As well, our government's legislation to restrict so called 'house arrest' recently passed second reading in Parliament. We are working to make sure that this bill also receives Royal Assent, so that dangerous criminals do not serve their sentences of imprisonment at home in the community instead of a correctional facility.

These measures are only a part of the government's comprehensive justice agenda. The government has already passed measures to combat reckless shootings, and is currently working to pass legislation that targets serious drug crime, auto theft and identity theft.

We will continue with these and upcoming measures to crack down on crime and keep Canadians safe.
