Changes bring more involvement
This week I want to discuss how this is an exciting political time in New Brunswick, not only for politicians but for the people of the province as well. There is a movement in the province for more involvement by the public in government decisions.

A year after announcing intentions to regulate and fund midwives in the province's hospitals, provincial health minister Mike Murphy introduced legislation last month to make it possible. Beginning in 2009, the Department of health will hire eight midwives, and add four more each year until the needs of New Brunswick women are met.

The idea of banning plastic bags was welcomed in Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, just over a year ago. They were the first municipality in Canada to implement the ban, and in doing so, have diverted about 2000 plastic bags a week from their landfills.

Grandparents and grandkids - building the bond
While my father spent his workday toiling away in the fields and my mother cared for nursing home patients, I was fortunate to have an important relative in my family who kept me company whenever I wished. My grandparents lived half a mile away from our home and through a circuit of trails, between woods and potato fields, I was able to walk alone and worry free to their house.

Examining party politics
Municipal elections are very different from their provincial and federal counterparts in many ways. Locally, there is little mud-slinging by candidates, and due to the very brief (three week) campaign period, not much of a "campaign trail".
