Spring Session draws to a close

Another successful session of Parliament has come to a close. Our government continues to deliver results for Canadians.

The first half of 2008 was productive as we lowered taxes, strengthened Canada's justice system and delivered stable, consistent infrastructure funding for our communities.

The recent passage in the House of Commons of the Budget Implementation Act means that our government will introduce new Tax-Free Savings Accounts on January 1, 2009.

These accounts will allow all Canadians to deposit up to $5,000 every year and watch it grow, tax free. The funds you deposit can then be withdrawn at any time, for any purpose, free from tax.

Our government also remains committed to paying down the national debt. This fiscal year alone we will make a $10.2 billion debt payment.

We must not leave future generations with the burden of an overwhelming national debt. Our government remains committed to running the nation's finances in a responsible manner.

I am also proud to report that our government continues to make strides in toughening Canada's criminal code.

The passage of the Tackling Violent Crime Act means that impaired drivers, gun criminals, sexual predators and society's most dangerous offenders face stronger penalties.

With every session of Parliament our government is putting an end to Canada's revolving door justice system.

Finally, with Budget 2008 the Federal Gas Tax Fund became permanent.

This means that municipalities across Canada, both large and small, will see an additional $2 billion in infrastructure every year, forever.

Federal Gas Tax funding has already led to several important improvements right here in Fundy Royal.
