Organizers announced the cancellation on Thursday morning. There is no rain date.

“It is with deep regret that the decision to cancel the Saint John Santa Claus Parade has been made, due to the pending storm of heavy rain and extremely high winds, it has been deemed to be a safety issue that cannot be resolved,” a post on the parade’s Facebook page said.

This would have been the parade’s 70th year.

The post said the cancellation followed “a lot of discussions with groups” as well as an exploration of other options.

The parade, which runs from the uptown to Lansdowne Avenue, is often viewed as the official kick-off to holiday celebrations in the Port City.

This is not the first time it has been cancelled. Last year’s parade marked a resumption of the annual tradition after a two-year pandemic hiatus.

Residents will still be able to catch a glimpse of Old St. Nick this month, with the Lancaster Santa Claus Parade scheduled for 1 p.m. and the KV Santa Claus Parade on Nov. 25.

The Facebook post said organizers will plan rain dates for the event starting next year.
